The Yankees have decided to use yesterday’s off-day to juggle their rotation a bit. To make a long story short, everyone will pitch on regular rest rather than get the extra day except for Freddy Garcia, who was bumped back to accommodate the rest of the staff. Instead of Hiroki Kuroda, Garcia, and David Phelps against the Orioles this weekend, it’ll be Kuroda, Phelps, and Phil Hughes. CC Sabathia, Garcia, and Kuroda will start the three games against the Rays next week.
“There’s not one exact reason (for the juggling),” said Joe Girardi this afternoon. I’m guessing Hughes’ home/road split had something to do with it, ditto breaking up to the two innings-eaters in an effort to spread out the bullpen rest a bit. Freddy will only face the Orioles once rather than twice as well, and they’re the closest competition right now. So yeah, doesn’t seem to be one reason in particular.
