LHP Nestor Cortes has been promoted from Low-A Charleston to Double-A Trenton, the team announced. That has to be a temporary move. Cortes has been really good this year, but not “skip him over High-A permanently” good.
Triple-A Scranton (9-3 win over Pawtucket)
- CF Ben Gamel: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
- DH Nick Swisher: 0-5, 2 K
- RF Aaron Judge: 2-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — no homer today, so he showed off his speed with a triple instead
- C Gary Sanchez: 2-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 PB — 5-for-13 (.385) in his last three games, so he’s starting to come around a bit … he hadn’t been hitting much since coming back from the broken thumb
- 1B Tyler Austin: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — he’s hitting .301/.366/.671 in 20 games since the promotion
- LF Cesar Puello: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
- RHP Diego Moreno: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 3/1 GB/FB — 35 of 57 pitches were strikes (61%) … had to make the spot start with Luis Cessa in the big leagues
- LHP Tyler Webb: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 30 of 48 pitches were strikes (63%)
- RHP Gio Gallegos: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 29 of 44 pitches were strikes (66%)
- RHP Conor Mullee: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — ten of 14 pitches were strikes … 45/10 K/BB in 34.1 innings with the RailRiders this season
Double-A Trenton (12-2 win over Akron)
- DH Dustin Fowler: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
- LF Mark Payton: 3-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 K
- 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-4, 2 R, 1 HBP — 14-for-24 (.583) with three doubles, two walks, and two strikeouts in his last six games
- C Kyle Higashioka: 3-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 1 K — that’s four homers in his last six games and nine homers in his last 18 games … I wish I knew what to make of his season … he’s not young (26) but he’s always had power and been a good defender … injuries, including Tommy John surgery, derailed him a few years back
- 2B Jose Rosario: 1-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 K — back from his brief rehab stint with Staten Island … he missed more than a month after taking a pitch to the head
- CF Michael O’Neill: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 K – first Double-A dinger for Paul’s nephew
- LHP Caleb Smith: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 4/2 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — 42 of 64 pitches were strikes (66%), plus he picked a runner off first
- LHP Nestor Cortes: 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1/3 GB/FB — 38 of 62 pitches were strikes (61%) … not a bad Double-A debut
High-A Tampa was rained out. They’re going to play a doubleheader tomorrow.
Low-A Charleston (11-5 loss to Rome)
- SS Kyle Holder: 0-5, 1 K
- DH Chris Gittens: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K — second in the system with 13 homers (Judge has 15)
- RF Jhalan Jackson: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K — 9-for-26 (.346) with three doubles, five walks, and three strikeouts
- 3B Angel Aguilar: 2-4, 1 2B
- 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 E (throwing)
- RHP Domingo German: 4 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 1/3 GB/FB — 39 of 54 pitches were strikes (72%) … first game action in August 29th, 2014 due to Tommy John surgery … obviously there’s going to be some rust to shake off … the good news is healthy and pitching in actual games again
Short Season Staten Island (7-2 win over Vermont)
- CF Ricardo Ferreira: 1-4, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP — 21-year-old hit .382/.513/.492 (189 wRC+) with 39 steals, 59 walks, and 48 strikeouts in 62 Dominican Summer League games last year
- LF Dom Thompson-Williams: 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
- DH Luis Torrens: 2-5 — back in the lineup after five days on the sidelines … apparently he’s been dealing with some kind of minor leg problem, not anything related to his surgically repaired shoulder
- 1B Kane Sweeney: 3-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K — he’s hitting .438/.561/.563 through eight games
- 3B Drew Bridges: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
- RHP Austin DeCarr: 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 6/3 GB/FB — 30 of 55 pitches were strikes (55%) … first game action since August 25th, 2014 for the team’s third rounder in 2014 … he missed last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery
- RHP Kolton Mahoney: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 46 of 60 pitches were strikes (77%)
Rookie Pulaski (11-5 win over Kingsport)
- CF Estevan Florial: 3-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB
- RF Isiah Gilliam: 3-6, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K — signed for $550,000 as the team’s 20th round pick last year … Gilliam has some of the biggest raw power in the system
- LF Leonardo Molina: 3-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI — third homer in 39 games this year … he hit three homers in 101 games total from 2014-15
- SS Welfrin Mateo: 4-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 CS — not quite sure when they scooped him up, but he’s already 20 and this is his pro debut, which is a good indicator he’s not much of a prospect (update: this isn’t his pro debut, nevermind)
- LHP Jeff Degano: 2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 6 K, 2 WP, 1/0 GB/FB — that’s a no good season debut for last year’s second round pick
- RHP Spencer Mahoney: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/1 GB/FB
Rookie GCL Yanks East & West had their regular Sunday off-day.
